Power Supply Issues RS2+ Setup as a Permanent Base Station

Hello everyone,

I’m currently setting up a RS2+ as a permanent base station and I’m facing some issues. Here’s my setup per these posts( One, Two ):

  • I’m using the USB-C port connected to an Ethernet adapter for my internet connection.
  • The EXT port is being used for power, where I’m using a connector cable with violet as the positive and red as the negative with this power supply (and tried this one too).

However, the unit isn’t receiving power, and the display in Emlid Flow isn’t showing the lightning bolt charging icon next to the battery when everything is plugged in. If the battery is filled using the USB C, the ethernet setup works well for NTRIP.

Has anyone experienced similar issues or have any suggestions on what might be wrong with the power supply? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello! Check the voltage. If your adapter gives less than 6 volts, it will not work.

What I have experienced is it can’t do both charge and Ethernet at once

Had similar issue one time. I ended up carefully open up the usb cable and cut on of the power leads inside the cable.

As far as I can tell, both power supplies I’ve use deliver 12 volts at 1.5 amps.

Yes, that is why I am trying to use the EXT port for power (per the picture in the post, the two other posts cited and words I use to describe my issue :joy:). But thanks for the reply, I can see you’ve been through it too! Your link did provide some context about the original manufacturing intention for USB c to only be used for power supply not communication per Ethernet adapter.

Wow, okay, that is not something I had considered.
So you had the same setup Reach cable 2m w/o 2nd connector to power via EXT (violet to hot red ground), USB c to Ethernet?
And cutting the red and back INSIDE THE USB cable was enough to make the other power work via EXT?
Also, once you cut the usb power wires, could you see a charging icon inside of flow app when connected to the rs2?

I’m ready to try anything! Oddly enough, the switch I’m connecting the Ethernet cable to is part of a camera system so I’m assuming it likely has Power Over Ethernet technology, not that I’m trying to use it. It might just be sending mixed signals as it were.
Thanks for the insight!

In my experience power maintenance works much better with a 3a charger, but it sounds like others have had the same trouble. I guess you don’t have an acceptable source of Wi-Fi? I set mine up with normal usb power and added a repeater to my home Wi-Fi. I also installed a portable battery generator with a solar panel in case the power goes out. Works great.

No. It was an M2 but the interface is similar.
I had to make data go through the usb to Pi unit without power. The M2 pulls to much power for the Pi to handle.

I have everything working according to this scheme:

It has been working for 7 months already. Everything works great. The only thing I couldn’t get right was to get the Trimble and Leica receivers to work correctly from the Rs2 base. Everything else works fine.

:astonished: Wow, quite the setup you have there!

Good to hear. I’m trying to avoid WiFi because there is no reliable WiFi on the roof but there is a Ethernet switch. I might try to get creative with a range extender I have. Thanks for the idea. Also, the12 volt - 3 amp service might be all I need.

Or just plug the ethernet into a Wi-Fi router.

Unfortunately, all of these electronics are in a tiny weatherproof shared cabinet. I’m doing my best to be a good roommate :joy:.

I hope you find your answer soon, or you might end up on TV!

So yes, I’ve gone down the rabbit hole a bit. I’ve got a few potential power supplies to work with. On the low side 12v 1.5a and on the high side 19v 3.3 amp.

That post has been my guiding star throughout this process!

Could you show what adapter you are using to convert Lan USB to Type C?

Per other recommendations I’m using a TP-Link USB C To Ethernet Adapter(UE300C) it works great on battery power but I realized today that the switch it’s attached to is POE. The EXT connection continues to not provide power.
