RTK Image Feature Request

Happy Friday All! So I know about the RX compatibility with Pix4D Capture, but I am very interested in simply being able to take pictures with accurate geotags. I am not a fan of Pix4D and would much rather process this kind of data locally so I have complete control. This could have huge implications for the construction industry as Catch is still in it’s infancy in our world and honestly it is overkill and far too expensive for what it does. These would not be big data sets and I will render a guess of average captures of 40-50 photos. We do not even necessarily need auto-capture. That feature on Catch is horrible and very hard to control efficiently. It would be preferrable to capture imagery individually from controlled angles. Food for thought.

yep. Simple app to assign the position from the RX to the image exif, or even a reference file. DJI’s been doing it for a decade. Someone should be able to step up.

Try REDcatch RTK Camera app. It works with RX

Is it only for Android?

I think so. The big things for me is that it does not use mock location and the paid version gives greater accuracy in the output.

You can also have a look at 3dsurvey.si rtk videogrammetry. Works with ardu simple and android devices

Hi @michaelL

Welcome to our community forum,

I’ve noted your suggestions and shared them with our development team as feature requests. But I agree with @kevin.hainsworth. You can use REDcatch RTK Camera app as another option.

If you have any more suggestions in the future, do let me know.

Agreed. Now I just need to find an Android with a decent camera!

Just tried the RTK Camera app on a Pixel 7 and before I could get a chance I couldn’t get the RX to connect to bluetooth. Anyone else using a Pixel?

From my experience, the Tripltek is the best tablet I’ve ever own and the brightest.

12GB RAM / 256 GB Storage

4K-48MP Camera

Hyper-Engine 8 Core CPU (70% faster than T8)

12,200 mAh Large Battery

I’ve intentionally kept the apps to a minimum to maintain its performance. I know the price is kinda high but it’s well worth it to me.

I presume one of your requirements is to do this with a “data collector” ie. a tablet or phone.

If not, there are other options:

  1. Hot shoe with DSLR or something like the Sony a6000

  2. 360 cameras made with pi’s similar to Trimble’s discontinued v10 camera add-on:

I cannot find the thread on ODM at the moment, but there is a pic out there of a gent with around 8 12mp pi cameras mounted in a spherical manner for terrestrial photogrammetry. The zoo example where they combine drone, 360, and point and shoot cameras is a good example of its versatility.

I, personally, would like to see Emlid maybe role their own “Lightning like” service. The pricing would align better with their market than Pix4d IMO. They would not be the first to do so as it is open source.

What Emlid could pull off relatively easy:

The potential competition (they also allow one to do mission planning with consumer grade drones and will, hopefully, be bringing RTK to many consumer drones):

ODM is a bit more to wrap your head around, but it is one of the cheapest, decent options:

For me, the biggest upgrade I would like from Emlid is an outward facing 12mp camera included in the next antenna. If one could take geotagged images, it would be a big step up. If they chose so, they could make additional revenue offering Lightning like services. Live, on the DC point creation, like CHC has, is a big step up. That’s why I think just geotagging images is their best, next option.

Great post, thank you. Yes, I am simply looking for the Pix4D Catch functionality but even more simple. No silly overlap/pose triggering, just plain-old 1/2/3 sec interval and manual. I’ll process locally in Metashape or TBC to produce a point cloud for comparison with BIM models and/or design on top of and put back into AR.

Update on RedCatch RTK camera… installed on two different devices and nothing yet. Pixel 7 Pro wouldn’t connect to the RX, never asked for the PIN. I bought an 8" rugged tablet and it connects to the RX, but RTK Camera wouldn’t setup with my NTRIP configuration so I have a ticket in with them now. I’m suspecting they don’t like either the URL or the port number.
