No luck with local NTRIP or Caster configs

  1. Reach RS3 Firmware version 32.2
    Emlid Flow version 11.7
    Mavic 3E

Today I had no problem receiving RTK correction to the RS3 rover to collect GCPs. The problems were when I used the RS3 as a base to try the caster and local NTRIP scenarios in an area with reasonable internet. Wasn’t able to get the drone to connect to base in either situation to get RTK. Have a SIM card in the RS3 and a cellular dongle in the RC PRo controller for the M3E. All I could manage was getting the base to log raw data with no input or output settings. Just the drone receiving corrections from POLARIS RTK. That was ok, since I could use the base’s RINEX file for PPK.

Would sure like to get the other configurations to work. Frustrating since I’m trying to learn and get the confidence to know I can survey in any environment.

Thanks in advance if you can shed some light.

Using the Local NTRIP workflow, you do not need an internet connection at all. The base, RS3 in your case, transmits corrections over the LAN (Local Area Network) hosted by your smart device. In theory, you could use the network hosted by the RS3, but it seems to work best if you use a smart device instead.

Likewise, the cellular dongle in your RC Pro is irrelevant for using the Local NTRIP option. The RC Pro just needs to be connected via wifi to the same network that the RS3 is sending corrections over. In the case of Local NTRIP, you want all of your devices to be close enough together to be able to operate on the same LAN.

Also, please don’t post the same question over several threads. Very inefficient. Thanks!

Sorry for the duplicate posts. I’m aware of not needing internet for local NTRIP and my setting reflected that. As I understand it, the RS3 creates the local NTRIP, correct? So what should the input/output setting be on that? Output: local NTRIP, then local NTRIP on the drone controller, right? Controller connected to RS3’s hotspot? If so, it didn’t work.

Then for the Emlid caster scenario, I had the caster credentials set for the base AND for the drone controller… and nothing.

Also, I didn’t use the controller dongle for local NTRIP. I used it for the Emlid Caster scenario as both base and drone need their own discreet internet, correct?

I’ll check out the link. Thanks.

Yes. On the RS3, Base output to Local NTRIP.
Make note of the IP
On the RC Pro, you enter the IP supplied by the RS3.
When all devices are connected to the same LAN (hotspot), you should have success. It is very straight forward. But if a single element is not perfect, it will fail.

Thanks. To my knowledge, I’ve done all that I read in the provided link and what you stated here. I’ll have to go over it again tomorrow to see if I’m missing something. I know for sure that both devices were connected to the RS3’s hotspot.

I would suggest trying the hotspot on your phone.

Connect both the RS3 and the RC pro to your phone’s hotspot.
Then select Local NTRIP and check the “i” icon to see the exact credentials needed to be entered into the RTK section on the RC Pro.

You should be golden. If it’s not working when you give it a try next, screen grab all of your settings and let us have a look.

Good luck!

Thank you. I thought the whole purpose of getting a SIM card for the RS3 was so it has internet… but I’ll try that.

For using Local NTRIP for drone operation where your base is at the same place as where you are operating the drone, you do not need a sim in the RS3. A sim in the RS3 is required if you are using it as your base, but it is far from where you are operating the drone. That is when the RS3 would need to connect to the internet, rather than simply using a local network.

Local NTRIP = No device needs internet
NTRIP Caster = both RS3 and RC Pro need access to internet individually.

I’d like to join to this discussion and share our guide on how to integrate Reach with Drone using Local NTRIP or Emlid Caster. Hope this helps!

Dave, for the local NTRIP scenario, I’m trying to take your advise and using my iOS phone’s hotspot instead of RS3’s hotspot. In it’s wifi tab, I’m supposed to “Connect to hidden network” and add my phone’s hotspot info. I don’t have any buttons that say “Connect to hidden…”. How do I accomplish this?

I do see “Advanced Settings” at the bottom and “Add network manually…” but it’s greyed out/disabled.

I don’t use an iphone so I can’t be sure how it will work for you.

But. If the RS3 does not find a network that it has connected to in the past, it will then go into host mode.

When it is in host mode, you will need to log into the RS3’s network with your phone and that is where you should be able to add your phone’s network.

Once doing so, you will need to re-start the RS3 while your phone’s hotspot is active, and then the RS3 should connect.

After the initial connection. Going forward, the RS3 should connect straight away to your phone if the hotspot is turned on as the RS3 boots. It will be looking for it.

I finally got the RS3 to connect to my phone’s hotspot. The problem is that the drones RC won’t let me save the local NTRIP credentials…and the RC is connected to the phone’s hotspot as well. What am I missing? Do I need to have a FIX? When setting Input to Local NTRIP, it was on a SINGLE. solution.

I know I can get a FIX. I did when I switched INPUT to a paid RTK service but not with the local NTRIP.

Hmmm. On my RC Pro, it retains the credentials into the Custom Network fields.

Also note that the IP address that the RS3 is sending may change between sessions. The username and password will be the same, but the address may change. So you have to check that each time.

In addition, if you are testing this, the RS3 and the drone have to see the sky. It won’t work if indoors.

Yes, I did have the current IP address inserted. I was outside but will move to a more open place.

grab some screenshots on your RC Pro RTK settings and the base settings on the RS3.

will do. first going to a more open space to try. Thanks for hanging in there with me. Growing pains LOL.

Went to an open field and had both RS3 and Controller connected to phone’s wifi hotspot. Never got past a SINGLE solution. Couldn’t manage to get the screen shots off the controller but here are screen shots from Emlid Flow showing all the settings. Also couldn’t save local NTRIP credentials on controller. I’m stumped.

If the RC Pro is reporting a “single” connection. That means it is not talking to the RS3 at all.

Without the controller’s screenshots, we won’t be able to possibly pick up what is not correct.

So, with what we see here, you need to connect your RC Pro to the wifi named “propeller”. Double check that first.
