Crypto mining with Onocoy and RS2 - get rewarded by providing GNSS reference station data

I was recently rewarded No.1 of the Station Setup Challenge in one of Onocoys challenges with 3 of Emlid`s RS2 receivers. Link to X post (Twitter) x.com

🏆 The results are in!

The onocoy team has voted, and we’re excited to announce the winners of our Station Setup Challenge! 🎉

It wasn’t easy to choose, but here are our 6 winners:

In honor of this award I thought I would give a shoutout to both Onocoy and Emlid. And also give a brief introduction to what the fuzz is about.

In super short term; Onocoy enables mass adoption of high precision positioning using blockchain technology. Advances in Web3 technology with blockchain and smart contracts make it possible to build and operate very large, decentralized GNSS reference station networks efficiently and securely.

You get rewarded by providing GNSS reference station data to onocoy.
If this is your cup of tea, head over to Onocoy, read up on how to get started with your Emlid receiver and earn tokens today!

If you got any question I`d be happy to answer as best as I can.
Onocoy has also its own Discord server for their community here

What I can find on their coverage map is not really practical. Are exact mount point positions available somewhere?

No, not accuratly or visible atm. Only your own stations coordinates are visible when you log in.
Connecting to a nearby refrence station, the dropdown list show distance to the different base stations.
But if you connect to a station, the accurate position is in the RTCM header in ECEF format (ITRF20) , the same format you get with NrCan. This position is accuratly detemind by PPP and is supposed to be within 1-2cm

Okay, thanks. Hopefully someday they will list the stations in order to see if the network is actually relevant in a certain location. Perhaps they are focusing on on-boarding folks and not so much marketing the network for real NTRIP use.

Not sure i fully get what you look for in more information about relevant station. Could you elaborate?
Other then the spec and quality level, e.g not sure I fully trust a random station made by “anyone”. That is my biggest concern

With the networks I have used, you can look up the geographic locations of mount points in order to determine their baseline to, and thus their suitability for, a project site. A mount point 120 km from the site is useless. So, it’s good to know before hand what to expect. Their map is vague.

Definitely work in progress.

Rock Robotic (GEODNET) has a similar crowd source network / blockchain scheme. Their coverage map is better.

Not sure if this might help, but there is pin tool you can drop on the map and get nearby stations and distances to it.
But yeah, its in Beta so still in development.

When I drop a pin, it shows the nearest mount points. But they are all UNAVCO/GAGE network mount points. I wonder if Onocoy is poaching them?

I`m pretty sure theres some kind of a agreement.
I see institutionals operators all round the world in their map, anything els would be suicid fairly quick

Hi @TB_RTK,

Thanks for sharing your experience with this challenge! It’s always cool to see how diversely our receivers are used.

I don’t get the “Rock” network usage.

You buy a $700 base - and only get access to your own base station? AND you have to run it with 100% uptime (impossible) to maintain free access?

The stations I have checked on Onocoy around here are all “free” to use stations you can get access to without Onecoy. (UK South)

I don’t use the Rock/(GEODNET) network. But I think if you add a base to the network, your choice is to get access to the entire network, or, the crypto stipend.

I think some of the institutional a free yes , but in most areas its scarce and to counter this they let random user share signals and in retur get rewared (Mining). E.g in my region there are none within 300km or so. But by sharing signals from my own RS2`s I already have up an running, this area is now covered.
