2021 Wrap Up: Recall of the Best New Features of the Year and Holiday Greetings

It’s time for a seasonal recap and praise to the best RTK GNSS community!

2021 was busy: we’ve added lots of features to the ReachView 3 app, released several updates of the Reach Firmware, and launched new software services—Emlid Studio and Emlid Caster Pro. Here is the complete list of features announced in 2021.

New ReachView 3 Features

Custom Coordinate Systems

It is now possible to create custom coordinate systems by entering all needed parameters. In the list of coordinate systems, hit the Plus button and set up your coordinate system, using four properties: ellipsoid your datum is based on, transformation, projection type, and geoid model. To learn more, check out our Docs.

DXF and Shapefiles Support

You can quickly export and import projects in DXF and Shapefiles formats. This allows you to seamlessly work with popular GIS and CAD programs, including software by Esri and Autodesk. Find out more on our Community Forum.

Base Shift Within the Existing Project

Base shift helps you calibrate your project data based on one point. If you face the difference between a base’s known and measured coordinates, the app can calculate an XYZ shift of your base’s position and apply the offset to further collected points. For more details, go to our Docs.

Multiple Languages Support

ReachView 3 for iOS and Android is now available in ten languages: English, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, French, Russian, Turkish, Polish, and Norwegian. We don’t stop there and expect more languages to come.

Manually Adding Points to the Project

If you want to add a couple of points to an existing survey, there’s no more need to import a new file. Go to the points list, tap on the Add point button, and fill in the fields with the point’s data.

Restarting and Turning Off the Receiver

It’s easy to restart and shut down your Reach from the app. To do this, tap on the connected device on the scanner or device settings screen and select a corresponding menu item.

Major Reach Firmware Updates

Legacy RTCM3 Support

Connect Reach RS2 as a base station with traditional third-party receivers and agricultural equipment using RTCM3 legacy messages 1004, 1008, 1012, 1033. Go to the Base mode in the ReachView 3 app, choose your type of legacy messages and the required rate. Discover the details in our blog article.

NMEA Output Configuration

We have added configurable NMEA position output in Reach Panel. It allows you to select a Talker ID and the desired set of NMEA messages to connect Reach rovers to various GIS apps, software for GPR, and agriculture machinery guidance.

Seamless Compatibility with OPUS and PPP Services

Ease your work with ready-to-use presets for OPUS and popular PPP services: AUSPOS, IBGE, CSRS. Open ReachView 3, go to the Logging screen, and choose a preset—the logs will automatically be adjusted for the required service. To learn more, check out our blog article.

You can also configure logging manually for use with other PPP services. Now, RINEX logs contain Antenna and Receiver header fields for importing the raw files into PPP services without any changes.

RINEX Logging Setup

If you log to RINEX, you can manually switch on the recording of backup raw logs. ReachView 3 also allows you to configure logging by filtering out satellite systems, setting up the logging rate and the antenna height.

Upgrading Reach Firmware via Mobile Data

To enable upgrading your Reach RS2 firmware via mobile data, open the Mobile data tab in ReachView 3 and select the Allow updates using mobile data toggle. You can still download updates via Wi-Fi if the receiver is connected to a Wi-Fi network.

New Post-Processing Software Emlid Studio

We have launched a beta version of our own PPK software—Emlid Studio. It’s a free app available for Windows and Mac. Emlid Studio features a simple interface that makes post-processing easier than ever.

To start using Emlid Studio, simply download the app for your computer—either Windows or macOS.

Post-Processing Data

Using Emlid Studio, you can post-process data recorded with Reach receivers and other GNSS receivers or NTRIP services. You will need RINEX observation and navigation files or raw data in the RTCM3 format.

Just choose the positioning mode, add RINEX files, enter the antenna height for the rover and the coordinates of the base. Click the Process button, and Emlid Studio will do the rest. Once the processing is done, you will see the result on the plot.

Geotagging Drone Images

Emlid Studio allows you to add geotags to the drone images’ EXIF data. You’ll need aerial photos and the file with the position data. To produce it you can first post-process your GNSS data—all in one app.

Stop & Go with ReachView 3

With Emlid Studio, you can get separate points from the track of measurements obtained with the Stop & Go feature in ReachView 3. Emlid Studio calculates all solutions using RINEX files from the base and the rover. You’ll need a position file and a CSV file from ReachView 3.

Years should always be great for people delivering good products and good service.
I’m sure that we are going to see some great new features in ReachView.
It could become a best-of combination of features we find in SurvCE/PC, Cube and Fieldgenius. :sunglasses: (Hopefully Trimble fanboys and -girls won’t roast me now.)
