Using RS3 as Hotspot for Tablet

Hi All,

I’m helping a customer get setup with a new RS3. I’ve never used an internal SIM but they want to. Their goal is to have the Emlid provide internet as a hotspot to a Samsung Tablet. They have active SIM cards they’ve used in other devices so we know they work. They’ve tried both a Verizon and a T-Mobile. The Verizon didn’t connect at all but after adding fast.t-mobile.com for the APN, the T-Mobile card connected and allowed enabling data access over the mobile hotspot. We also were able to see that the Emlid was able to receive corrections from an RTK provider.

The problem is that the tablet keeps disconnecting from the Emlid and losing the data connection from the wi-fi hotspot of the Emlid.

Anyone able to use the RS3 with a SIM card as a mobile hotspot for an android tablet or phone?

Tablets tested were:

  1. Samsung Galaxy Tab A
  2. Samsung Galaxy Tab Active4 Pro (model SM-T630)

We’re working on providing a solution for RS3 to work with the Verizon SIM cards. I’ll let you know once there are any updates.

Regarding the sharing the mobile data, you could insert a SIM card into the mobile phone and connect your Reach to the Internet that way as a workaround. I’ve also written you a PM as further troubleshooting will require sensitive information.

They have been using the workaround but they’d like to use a tablet that does not have a SIM slot in the future. Also, It often takes a minute to get the Emlid to get the corrections coming in when using the Tablet’s wifi.

Is it a known problem when the SIM is from Verizon?

I am experiencing the same issue with constant dropped connectivity.

When I turn on the hotspot, it works for a few minutes and drops the connection. After 5 minutes or so, it is possible to connect again, yet it will drop the connection in a few minutes again. Thus, it is a constant never-ending cycle.

Yes, there’re some restrictions from Verizon’s side. We’re working on resolving them for the Reach RS3, but there are no ETAs I can share with you. In the meantime, you can check SIM cards that worked for some of our users from the USA: AT&T (data+voice plan) and EIOTCLUB/Twilio/SPECTRUM SIM cards.

I tried two different plans with different SIM cards from Verizon, and in every case, I had the same problem with instability. Verizon is very picky with devices not officially approved for use on their network; thus, their system might be temporarily blocking connections, which triggers RS3 to reset the hotspot. At least, this is my current theory.
