Great idea. If I may ask, are you using the scanning handle just as a convenient way of holding the kit or are you using it with Pix4D Catch or another solution ? I am looking to use the same approach as Pix4D Catch but with vSite,Dot3D, or other iOS LiDAR/photogrametry solutions.

I’ve been using it with Catch. As long as you have good corrections coming in it works very well. I let the trial lapse but decided to pick it up again for a month because I have a huge project coming up that I think it is perfect for even though it’s not the designed use-case.

I hooked up with a service that documents cemeteries and puts them in a GIS-style website so people can go see a nice high-res drone ortho and then click on the memorial to see it from an RTK-tagged ground shot. Main problem with the Pix4D design is that it only allows for auto-capture, and you cannot just take individual images. There are 5,000 memorials! I was able to hack the system and figured out that if I put it in device pose capture mode and turn it all the way down to 2-3 degrees that I could take a shot, pause, unpause and very slight tilt the setup and it will quickly take another - then pause and repeat. I haven’t used the targets yet, but I’m sure they work well. I can rectify the cloud with other data outside of processing if I need to.

I’d love to hear how the other solutions go because I cannot afford Pix4D outside of projects like this that will pay for it.

Here in SC, whenever we do a boundary survey, we’re required to search for old cemeteries and locate. We searched a recent 100 acre boundary we did; nothing found. I always pull up the state’s LIDAR and low and behold a 200’ square showed up. We investigated and sure enough there was a 1’ tall rock wall on the cemetery limits with stone grave markers in a large patch of woods. I rode right by it in my ranger. We located about 30 “headstones” and the rock wall. An elderly neighbor said he had heard about it from other family members, but didn’t know where it was.

Technology is cool when it applies to real world situations.

That’s the kind of stuff I’m talkin’ about! I wish the counties here were more interested in preserving our past and had budgets to reconstruct all of these places. Otherwise they just disappear in the woods. I would do it for free if I had the time. You all have much older stuff out their but late 1700’s is pretty cool from around here. Lots of old revival style churches and cemeteries. Sounds like a retirement plan…
