RS2 rolling dots infinetly, faulty c-type

I have an RS2 that won’t finish booting and the dots keeps on rolling.
This unit has a bad c-type port as well. I have use rubber bands to tilt the connection in the correct angle to have it charge.
Therefore, I can’t flash it to reset the firmware hoping it will boot, because of the faulty connection.

Is there an alternative to reset the firmware in these conditions?

Hi @avelez, reflashing the firmware on the Reach can only be done via the USB-C port.

Let’s try to troubleshoot this. Have you charged overnight and rebooted the device? Additionally, please let me know the receiver’s network LED color.

The unit is fully charged and a minute after the startup, the network icon turns and stays solid blue, but the dots never stop rolling.

I manage 30+ units of the RS2+ and it’s becoming a issue. Four of them can’t charge through the c-type because it has become loose and won’t make contact.
I am getting the chargers for ext ports for now, but if I run into this issue where it doesn’t boot, this will make it obsolete.

I honestly think that the C-type experiences unnecessary stress, which is due to the rubber lid generating pressure in the port when plugged in.

Never used them… but maybe an idea? Obviously the silicone cover is still a problem though. Have a feeling next model will resolve that problem.

So leave the C-type magnetic tip inside the port and just cover it with the lid?

Just an idea for the ports that havent been ruined to increase the lifespan of the port. The silicone covers are obviously still a problem though. The tension won’t allow the magnetic connection to stay. I guess more so if your silicone covers have broke off and not used. Again, just an idea.

Maybe could use really really short usb-c cable extension if it can tuck inside the compartment to alleviate the wear and tear of the port? Prob won’t fit though.

I have not gotten a replay back from you. However, I had a talk with my supplier and they mention that the RS2+, redesign of the RS2, addressed that issue. I was told that I should not be worry about that happening to our fleet of emlids. Is it that the c-type port was reinforce on the RS2+?

Regardless, I wanted to confirm this.
I have 18 RS2 and four of them have the charging port issue, but has not happened to the rest of them or the RS2+ units we have… yet.
So to address this, I have purchased @timd1971 suggestion, or similar, and it seems like it could avoid pressure from the rubber lid from the c-type cable.

The attached video shows that the tip stays inserted and plugs the magnetic to charge.
However, one thing bothers me and feedback would be great.
Would these magnetic tips affect the overall performance or cause interference when collecting or using the receiver as a base if left inside the C-type port?

Let me know,

Hi @avelez, I consulted with our engineer regarding this. The pressure from the USB-C cable and the rubber silicon cover is unlikely to generate enough force to noticeably impact the USB port. I am checking about the USB-C port improvement.

Regarding the magnetic tip, it shouldn’t affect overall performance. However, we can test it to be sure. Please record a raw data log using the receiver with the magnetic tip and send it to me to check.

These may work also in order to save the wear and tear of the built in USB C port and more solid connection if need be (if they fit inside of course, havent used them. May not fit with silicone cover closed. Magnetic may be better. Or just simply use a right angle cable?):

@merryna.anggriani
I was able to find the right angle to make a connection for charging and firmware flashing, after days of attempts.

After completing the process and two additional restarts, the dots roll without stopping. Please find the attached full report of the unit and give me the verdict for the survival of this unit.

Thanks

Yeah, this happens quite often with devices such as cell phones. Therefore the magnetic connector idea to greatly increase the life of the physical connection port. Otherwise, like you eventually found out, have to hold it just the right way to keep it connected long enough to finish :upside_down_face:

Damn ! Thanks @timd1971 ! I haven’t ever seen those. I’ll have to get some !

I agree about the port cover. Although I don’t use my RS2 as much as others (I treat the RS2 like treating a theodolite), I can see eventually it will break off. I’ve always wondered about the USB port too, I don’t think there was adequate checking about user access when being designed.

@avelez I am checking it and will let you know as soon as I have more information.
