Reach won't boot

I see @andrew.yushkevich replied as I was writing this up:

on your Ubuntu command line, first type this:
tail -f /var/log/syslog | tee my_ubuntu_system_log-ReachUSB.txt

then plug in Reach and let it boot up

hit CNTRL-C to cancel the above command

then upload the file created or paste the text here

I finally got the Green light on, not sure how. I was attempting to re flash on windows, waited to boot the reach until the windows program began searching for it. Donā€™t know why it worked the last time, I had tried the same thing a seemed like a hundred times before. Lucky timing on my part I guess.

I got what I was looking for today, (My first RTN fix with one reach set up as base at my office and the reach Iā€™ve been having trouble with as a rover getting corrections over NTRIP. worked great!

Going to start back trying to ssh into the reach unit again now, I just want to know what Iā€™m doing wrong. Heres the output you requested. ( sorry, I couldnā€™t locate the file my /var/log didnā€™t have a folder syslog)

Green light! Way to go!

OK from your log:

you will probably have to prefix this command with sudo to run with root privileges:
ifconfig enp0s20u2 up 192.168.2.2
you can now access Reach in your browser at http://192.168.2.15
to ssh, type:
ssh root@192.168.2.15
You will see:
The authenticity of host '192.168.2.15' can't be established. ECDSA key fingerprint is ..... Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)?
answer yes
password: emlidreach
now your prompt should change from this:
mwfoshee@mwfoshee-Inspiron-3521:~$
to this:
root@reach[~]#

now you have sshā€™d in to Reach. You may proceed with the commands mentioned above:

Youā€™re gonna hate me, I first got an error: no such device (unfortunately even at 54 years old I canā€™t help but fool with stuff)

re ran command to generate log file: this time output was:
May 2 20:45:21 mwfoshee-Inspiron-3521 kernel: [ 2588.200633] rndis_host 3-1:1.0 usb0: register ā€˜rndis_hostā€™ at usb-0000:00:14.0-1, RNDIS device, ca:39:81:3e:78:a8

May 2 20:45:21 mwfoshee-Inspiron-3521 kernel: [ 2588.235721] rndis_host 3-1:1.0 enp0s20u1: renamed from usb0

so I changed your original command to reflect enp0s20u1 as opposed to the original enp0s20u2

Error this time:

mwfoshee@mwfoshee-Inspiron-3521:~$ ifconfig enp0s20u1 up 192.168.2.2
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Operation not permitted
SIOCSIFADDR: Operation not permitted
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Operation not permitted

Waiting patiently for instruction.:innocent:

possible solution from google ā€œsudo service networking restartā€

sorry, you told me to use sudo, I thought once I used it I didnā€™t have to continue using it. Thanks, Iā€™m connected!

The bonus now is that simultaneously, you can:

  • use ReachView and change wireless settings with your smartphone
  • ditto with your computer (in case you loose the wireless connection)
  • troubleshoot the wireless connection with the command line

Now you are in a position to really find out what goes on under the hood!
