Points get renumbered on export

When I export a CSV from Emlid Flow 360 on PC all the points get renumbered. This has been an ongoing issue, is there ever going to be a fix?

Hi @Sam_DeLong,

To confirm, you are using the PENZD export, right? If so, this is the expected behavior. With the PENZD export, all the points are named as numbers.

You can use the custom export instead to retain the names. However, this is only available under the Survey Plan.

That is a nice work around, but truthfully I think EMLID should not have Point “Numbers” change. I just can’t see the reason someone would do that, there are never letters in the point number box so I don’t understand why?

Hi @Sam_DeLong,

We designed it this way as AutoCAD only accepts point names as numbers when importing points from the file.

I reopened this because I think it needs more consideration. The system should not allow alpha characters in the point number field, that’s what codes and descriptions are for and most design software that Surveyors and Contractors use follow suit. Operators should be using point numbering standards to designate different types of points. Some systems allow for “layers” of points but those becomes very cumbersome if not strictly followed. Our base template as an example.

1-99 Control stakeout for localization
101-199 Primary control (localized)
200-299 Secondary control
300-499 Traverse
500-999 Building control
1000-4999 Civil stakeout
5000-9999 Building stakeout
10000-14999 Reality capture control (GCP’s, checkpoints, laser scan & AR targets)
15000+ Asbuilts

From the perspective of someone who not only collects data but imports and analyzes it I ask field operators to stop exporting full field reports. Seriously. The first thing we are going to do is resave the file and delete all the unnecessary (incompatible) columns and rows. The “simple” PNEZD export should be just that without manipulation of the data. If you want all the other data use the custom report.

I agree 100% with @michaelL ! At one point, and I think they still do, Carlson allows for alpha numerical numbers. I guess maybe it makes since at some point but never with our firm.

We basically use the same format as @michaelL . It’s easy and you don’t even have to think about it in the field or office. Collection of field data should be as simple as possible and this is one area that should be simple.

That’s correct, Carlson does allow for alphanumeric. It’s been a minute since I have used Survey but if I remember correctly you have to use an apostrophe for some reason. Is that right?

AGREE.

But here’s something to complicate things if one (OP?) so desires using FieldGenius

I get it but IMO it’s plenty easy to just put the pt# and stk in the description. Seems like someone could probably code that as part of staking mode. We’re here for Flow though…

Understood. Just remembered FG also allowed alphanumerics and unicode for point numbers… which i assume Carlson does to? No idea, don’t like Carlson at all.

Either way it shouldn’t have any bearing on changing data values in an export. It seems like those who want a more complicated workflow and notation system should be the ones that have to use a custom exporter and keep simple workflows simple.

We’ve been using Carlson since they bought out C&G Survey. We grew up on C&G from the first days it was a DOS operating system with a Radio Shack Tandy TRS80 pc. At the time, it was the gold standard for surveyors and the very early days of the PC. In fact, you can still use C&G menus in Carlson.

Carlson is good software in my opinion. MicroSurvey is good too but I prefer Carlson.

I’ve been using Carlson Civil for over 20 years and can second that. I had Civil 3D for the last couple of years before I changed jobs when our Autodesk licensing changed so I took the time to learn it and it’s ok but Carlson is easier. It’s easier to control your points and easier to make standalone surfaces. Now that I have to use Civil 3D at my new job I can also say it just runs faster and less crashes with the same data.

Hey everyone!

We released a new version of Emlid Flow (11.3) and the problem should be fixed there for PENZD format.

Now the names stay intact on export if they are already numeric. Please, try it out!
