Placing GCPs with Reach RS to process accurate maps in DroneDeploy

Using standalone GPS geotagging on drones may lead to significant deviations between processed maps and reality. Placing ground control points with well known coordinates on site is crucial to achieve high accuracy of the final maps. Reach RS fits perfect for this kind of application and recently was used by DroneDeploy Team in a new study comparing how accurately known lengths can be measured using maps made with nearly every DJI drone at various altitudes, with and without ground control points.

In the study DroneDeploy demonstrates how using ground control can notably reduce measurement errors. The research conducted by DD is a strong proof point for the value of drone mapping with ground control and a testament to its ease of use and accessibility thanks to Reach RS and DroneDeploy GCP tool.

“Aerial mapping with GCP’s typically requires high-end GPS equipment and an in-depth understanding of geographic information systems (GIS) but with affordable hardware like the Emlid Reach RS and DroneDeploy’s intuitive GCPs workflow, the most complex aspect of precision mapping is more accessible than ever before,” said Andy Putch, Accuracy Project Manager at DroneDeploy.
