I have a NAVIO2 that I never used - until now. I want to load the latest Arducopter FW, but don’t believe that the latest versions are compatible.
What is the latest version that I can load?

There should be no issues with uploading the latest ArduCopter firmware on Navio2. You may try to do that. Here’s the guide explaining how you can get a custom version of the firmware.
