Success!!!

4 hours later and I was finally able to get the update on both units - had to find one of 3 iPhones in the family and the right combination and it worked.

I think it was ultimately down to the units recognising one phone’s wifi address over another - I went thru every imaginable permutation and this was all it came down to in the end.
