Carlson Base and RS3 UHF Compatability

Hello,

I have a RS3, and I am wanting to connect to a customer’s Carlson base station. The broadcast information I was given is below:

SATEL
4FSK
FEC Off
461.0750
12.5 Channel Spacing

Would the RS3 be able to connect to this? I know the guide says TrimTalk, but I’m not sure what all that is compatible with.

Thanks for the help!

If the radio is using the trimtalk protocol and the rs3 has the uhf antenna attached I think it should work. Emlid should know for certain when they reply to you

The SATEL radio link protocol is different to the TT450S protocol needed by the RS3

Hi @steve.m, Is there an option for the base to choose the TRIMTalk450S protocol on the setting? Do you have internet access in your work area? If so, you can consider connecting the base and the rover using Emlid Caster.

@merryna.anggriani This is a customer base that I cannot change. Cell service is spotty in the location the rover would be operating.

Is there any way for the RS3 to be able to receive the Satel protocol such as an external radio?

@steve.m, we currently support a third-party base using the TRIMTalk450s protocol. I understand your need for additional protocol and have noted your request. However, I can’t provide an ETA as it’s not on our current roadmap. If there are any updates, I’ll make sure to keep you informed!

You could contact mettatec and ask them what protocols they support with their radio:

One key issue is that one is Lora, very different to both the UHF needed and EMLID specific Lora. It specifies a 433MHz frequency, but that’s actually an allocated ICM band and not an RTK UHF frequency such as the customers 461.0750 MHz

It’s also described in multiple places as “Multibrand” so a clue to be careful with any other literal nuances.

Providing the base was sending the corrections in RTCM3 (you also need to check this) you would need something like a Pacific Crest XDL Rover 2

I’ve got one of these and it is configurable for a SATEL radio link, but I would be hesitant recommending chasing this particular device is it’s now out of production and I’ve never actually used it with the RS3, only Trimble. Used versions are out there but rare, and the cables with it’s smaller 5 pin Lemo connector non-existent. I’m currently in the process of modifying mine to accommodate an industry standard size 5 pin Lemo to match my other cables.

There is also a XDL Micro board only out there (essentially the guts of the rover) but for that you would have to fully integrate it yourself with power, housing, RF & data connectors & cables etc. so not a practical solution.

What these devices do is receive the radio link and forward the extracted RTCM3 to the receiver via Bluetooth or cable.

There may well be other similar current model radios around that may do the job but I’m not personally aware of any.
