Noob Questions on Why to Setup Emlid Caster

I have a few questions on using Emlid Caster. For our use cases which is agricultural and not concerned with very technical surveying, simply setting up a local base and rover was typically sufficient. We also had colleagues who’d had some frustrations with NTRIP and not needing it, we just avoided the headache.

Now it seems Emlid Caster is working well and for the cost of a cheap SIM card we can improve some of our operations. Here are my questions:

  1. We’re sending corrections to a non-Emlid rover with an onsite base and Harxon radio + antenna. We take it and set it up at each site (we do not care about global accuracy, only local). Instead, we could stick a SIM card in the Reach and use Emlid Caster to send corrections to the non-Emlid rover?

  2. Generally speaking, the real advantage is that we could create a known point at our office, and then leave the base station here for jobs and just take the Rover with both configured in Emlid Caster. Thus we never have to average base location or input manual coordinates. This is correct?

  3. People seem to still be having success connecting to a DJI m300/350 as well?

Thanks.

Hi @intenna

Let’s go through everything together.

Yes, this setup can work. Both the rover and the base need to have access to a good internet connection.

However, it’s important to note that Reach units support incoming and outgoing corrections in RTCM3 format. This means that your non-Emlid rover should accept or support RTCM3 messages for this to work.

Yes, you are correct. For this, ensure both units have the best satellite visibility to improve the results.

It is, however, essential to consider the baseline. We recommend using the shortest baseline possible. For dual-band receivers, accuracy in PPK H: 5mm + 0.5ppm, V: 10mm + 1ppm.

Yes! We actually have a guide on DJI RTK drones integration with Reach units.

You’ll need to place the Reach base over a point with known coordinates and configure base output via NTRIP. As mentioned above, with a stable internet connection, you can send the corrections to the drone controller using Emlid Caster.

I hope this answers your questions about your setup.
