Emlid Flow Survey will not import using CSV(PENZD) option

Help! Emlid Flow Survey has suddenly decided to not import any csv file using the “CSV (PENZD)” option. When I try to import a csv, every file in any storage folder on my android tablet is greyed out and won’t open. I’ve imported dozens of csv files into Flow Survey with the “CSV (PENZD)” option over the past year without a problem until today. If I use the plain “CSV” option, the files are recognized (file names are not greyed out) and accessible but they obviously won’t import since they’re not in the correct “CSV (PENZD)” format and the normal error message pops up. None of the dozens of csv files that I’ve opened in the past are recognized by Flow either. All are greyed out. I can open the csv files in Excel, Sheets, etc just fine so all files are good. Emlid Flow Survey recognizes the file names in their folder storage locations, but won’t import them. What’s going on?

I thought at one point I worked out that it didn’t like CSV UTF-8 Formats, so I would use Excel to save as “CSV (Comma Delimited)” instead of “CSV UTF-8 (Comma Delimited)”. Maybe save the same info as both and see which one works for you?

It’s been a while, so I can’t remember which one worked or not. For me, the CSV type out of AutoCAD is the right one.

Thanks for the suggestion but no-go on the UTF-8 format either. My files are all created in Excel and then I use “Save As” to create a basic CSV file. Been doing that for a year without a problem. What’s really weird is that Emlid Flow Survey suddenly won’t import ANYTHING, using the "CSV (PENZD) option, that I have successfully imported previously using that option. That’s many dozens of files. I upgraded to Emlid Flow Android App ver 11.4 earlier this month and I think (but am not certain) that this is the first attempt to import under this new version.

I’ve just tried on Version 11.4 for iOS and it is working for me.

Maybe this is something Emlid can look into, unless someone else can confirm on Android as well?

Thanks checking that Joel. I uninstalled and reinstalled the Android app on my tablet but still have same issue.

Could you please share an example of a file that won’t load? You can upload it here or send it to support@emlid.com mentioning this thread.

Hi @SteveB,

Thanks for sharing the files!

It seems that on some Android devices, file imports might be restricted depending on the folder where the files are stored. You might want to try moving the file to a different folder in your file manager and see if it’s no longer greyed out. Another approach is to check if the file appears accessible from the “recent” folder in your file manager. Typically, CSV (PENZD) files can’t be added from certain specific folders, which may be the cause.

I’ll continue investigating this issue and will update you as soon as I find more information.

I have the same problem. Emlid app suddenly won’t import the CSV (PENZD) file.

Just curious, are the file names there but greyed out? Flow seems to treat the files like they are not legitimate .csv files when trying to import them using the “CSV (PENZD)” option (without headers in the columns). I had to open the .csv file in Excel and add headers. Then I could import it using the plain “CSV” option which looks for headers. What tablet/phone are running Flow on? I use a Samsung Android tablet. I haven’t had a problem over the past year of use until recently. Possibly after upgrading to Flow ver 11.4.

Hi @SteveB @motorolaacount12,

I wanted to give you a quick update regarding the case about the CSV PENZD files on Emlid Flow .We’re actively working on resolving this, but we currently don’t have an ETA for a fix. We will need some time for it, but will notify here as soon as we have any updates.

Hi Everyone,

We released the new version of the Emlid Flow app (11.5). This version is focused on correcting this issue with the PENZD Files.

Please feel free to test the new version, and let us know if everything is working smoothly. Your feedback is always appreciated!

There is not one example of the header format for PENZD import option, could not finding it anywhere online or on emlid

I still can’t get points to import.

What is the header format?

That also confused me when I first started using Emlid Flow. Just remember that the "CSV (PENZD)" import option doesn’t use headers on the columns and won’t import the file if there is header information

In contrast, the plain “CSV” import option does require header information (e.g, the words “PointNum”, “Easting”, “Northing”, “Elev”, “Desc”). and will not import if there is no header row. Header on the first line is required.

Also, be careful with your descriptions in the “CSV (PENZD)” option since there are only a few characters that are allowed (letters, numbers, spaces and dashes). That bites me occasionally since I like to use the character “_” a lot which is not allowed.

And, finally, what version of Emlid Flow are you using? Ver 11.4 for Android caused me problems when trying to import with the “CSV (PENZD)” option on my Samsung tablet due to a bug in the software. (Although the “CSV” import option didn’t seem to be affected by the bug).

Thank you for this information, the trial and error method I was having to use wasn’t getting me anywhere. I am in version 11.5 using it through an Apple phone.

Is there a published list of allowed characters that can be used (I.e /, “, &) etc?

Version 11.5 for IPhone worked great for me over the weekend. The allowed character list is probably in on-line documentation somewhere but the easiest place to find it is in the Flow Import step (three dots next to the project name). When you tap on the “CSV (PENZD)” option in the list of import format options, a screen will come up with “Requirements”. There’s a sentence in there that says “You can assign a code to each point in the last column. The code can be up to 20 characters long and may contain only letters, numbers, spaces , and dashes.” Hope this helps.

Thanks again for your help. Not sure what model Emlid you run, but I am using a Reach RS. I bought the units for weekend warrior projects at my home. I use it with an NTRIP account and have noticed that getting FIX status can take 45-60 minutes to do so. The AR value stays at 1-2.5 for a very long time, then after a long duration of time the AR will quickly go to 1000 and I will get FIX. Our mount point isn’t that fair so I don’t think thats the issue. Any thoughts on how to improve this?

Sorry. That’s out of my realm. I have a couple of RS3s but I don’t use NTrip. I’d post your question on one of the other threads/categories in the Community that address NTrip issues; or just start a new topic. You’ll likely get some helpful responses. There’re some very knowledgeable users who monitor the posts.

Hi @LoreEng,

I see you’re having issues importing a CSV file and achieving a stable fix with your Reach device. Could you please email us at support@emlid.com with the CSV and the Full System Report for your device?

We’ll help you. Thanks!

For whatever reason this file still won’t import with a header, as you said the header was needed. Once I deleted the header it imported?

I’m not sure what else could be going on.

Selecting the “CSV” option requires headers
Selecting the “CSV (PENZD)” option should have no headers or blank rows at the top of the data columns

Header information contains only the acceptable characters?
