Today’s post in the Emlid Flow in Action series focuses on environmental monitoring. GNSS technology plays a key role in tracking and analyzing changes in ecosystems to support sustainable development and conservation efforts. Monitoring water quality, soil conditions, vegetation health, wildlife habitats, and the effects of climate change requires accurate data collection. It can be efficiently achieved using Reach receivers and the Emlid Flow app.
Getting ready for a survey
You can start preparing for your survey in the cloud-based Emlid Flow 360 app using your Emlid account. Create a project in the desired coordinate system and add any additional data you need:
-
To add soil, conservation, water resources, vegetation, and other maps, use WMS/WMTS layers. This will improve decision-making and help pinpoint areas that need immediate attention.
-
To ensure consistency in data collection, implement survey codes—from Emlid’s library or your own. This will facilitate data sharing and comparison across different projects and regions.
Now you’re ready to continue with Emlid Flow.
Collecting data in the field
Open Emlid Flow and log in to your Emlid account—your project and all the data contained will be ready for you. Then, begin collecting data—points, lines, or polygons. If the required code is not on the list, add it on the go.
If you’re mapping borders, habitats, or other large and elongated objects where the exact points aren’t critical, Emlid Flow’s Collector tool offers automatic data collection. You can set it up to collect points at specified distance or time intervals in the survey settings.
If you’re mapping in a remote area where RTK isn’t available, you can always record RINEX logs for post-processing or use the Stop & Go feature.
Back in the office
When you’re back in the comfort of your office, open Emlid Flow 360 and export your project in any of the specified formats:
With the tools from Emlid and Emlid Flow 360, you can streamline environmental monitoring and capture centimeter-accurate results allowing you to track even the most subtle changes in your ecosystem with confidence. Whether it’s monitoring shifts in terrain, vegetation, or water levels, you’ll have the precision and reliability you need for impactful decision-making.
